Common

Dental Emergencies We Treat

If you’re unsure if your situation counts as a dental emergency in Miami, call us and we’ll help you work it out. From a toothache or broken tooth to a bleeding gums emergency, here are some of the most common reasons patients contact us for immediate dental care.

Toothache and Dental Pain

A dental pain emergency can range from a dull ache to sharp, throbbing pain that makes it hard to eat, sleep or concentrate. Toothache is usually a sign that something needs attention, and the sooner it’s assessed, the more options we have for treating it and lower the treatment cost. We’ll identify the cause and talk you through what’s needed.

Broken, Cracked or Chipped Teeth

Teeth are made from strong enamel, but they are not immune to damage. A tooth can break, crack or chip from a fall, facial trauma, using your teeth as a tool, gradual wear with ageing, or from long-standing decay that has weakened the structure over time. If this happens, get in touch with us as soon as possible so we can help.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A knocked-out tooth needs attention quickly. If it’s safe to do so, place the tooth back in the socket, or otherwise keep it moist in milk or saliva while you make your way to us. Time matters with knocked-out teeth, so call us straight away and we’ll fit you in as a priority.

Lost or Broken Fillings & Crowns

When a filling or crown comes loose or breaks, it can leave the tooth exposed and sensitive to temperature, pressure and bacteria. We’ll assess the situation and either replace the restoration or discuss the next steps depending on the condition of the underlying tooth. If your fallen crown is intact, bring it with you. There is a chance that it can be cleaned and recemented, avoiding additional cost and refabrication  time.

Swelling, Infection or Abscess

Swelling in the face, jaw or gums can indicate an infection or abscess that needs prompt treatment. Dental infections can worsen over time, so it’s worth being assessed promptly. If you notice swelling, pain or a bad taste in your mouth, contact us so we can assess and manage it appropriately.

Bleeding Gums

If you notice gum bleeding, even if it doesn’t accompany toothache or any other dental inconvenience, it’s worth paying attention to. Bleeding gums could be a telltale sign of developing gum disease or irritation, which could lead to bigger problems if not assessed promptly.  If your gums are bleeding during brushing or flossing, or following a trauma or a dental procedure, please contact us for further assessment.

What to Do

In a Dental Emergency

If you’re experiencing a dental emergency during our opening hours, call us on (07) 5576 5194 and let our team know it’s urgent. We reserve appointments for emergencies, which allows us to offer same-day dental appointments where possible.

While you’re waiting to be seen, here are some general guidelines. For a toothache, rinse gently with warm salt water and avoid very hot or cold food and drinks. For a broken tooth, keep any pieces and avoid chewing on that side. For a knocked-out tooth, if it’s safe to do so, handle it by the crown (not the root) and keep it moist in milk or saliva. For swelling, a cold compress on the outside of the cheek may help manage discomfort.

These are general guidelines only and are not a substitute for professional assessment. Every situation is different, and we’ll assess yours thoroughly when you come in.
